Organisations working with communities

  • Greenway and Cycleroutes Limited, "charitable organisation formed in January 2016 to help local groups to develop walking and cycling routes for and run by the local community."
  • Life Cycle UK, charity based in Bristol but runs projects and services in other towns and cities across England
  • Sustrans, charity to promote sustainable transport. The charity is working on projects to encourage people to walk, cycle, and use public transport, to give people the choice of "travelling in ways that benefit their health and the environment". Sustrans' flagship project is the National Cycle Network, which has created over 14,000 miles of signed cycle routes throughout the UK, although about 70% of the network is on previously existing, mostly minor roads where motor traffic will be encountered.
As well as the National Cycle Network, Sustrans is working on Safe Routes to Schools, Safe Routes to Stations, Home Zones (liveable neighbourhoods), and Pont y Werin in Cardiff. Sustrans administers over 1500 volunteer Rangers who monitor over 60% of the National Cycle Network and contribute to the maintenance and promotion of the routes. Sustrans also works to promote cycling both for recreational and utility purposes, for example, by working with local authorities to organise cycling events, and by holding information and merchandise stalls at fairs and festivals.

Cycling UK

Cycling UK is a trading name of the Cyclists' Touring Club (CTC), which is a charitable organization supporting cyclists and promoting bicycle use. Cycling UK is registered at Companies House as "Cyclists' Touring Club", and is covered by company law. It works at a national and local level to lobby for cyclists' needs and wants, provides services to members, and organises local groups for local activism and those interested in recreational cycling. The original Cyclists' Touring Club began in the 1800s with a focus on cycle touring, but these days has a much broader sphere of interest encompassing utility cycling, bicycle commuting and many forms of recreational cycling. Prior to April 2016, the organisation operated under the brand "CTC, the national cycling charity". As of February 2020, the organisation's president is the newsreader Jon Snow.

Cycling UK works to encourage more people to take up cycling, to make cycling safer and more enjoyable, and to provide cyclists with the support and resources they need. Its activities vary from road safety promotion to the provision of organised cycling holidays.

It was launched in March 2009 and by January 2010 had planned 100,000 journeys. As of August 2015 the site has planned over 45 million itineraries. It was 'Highly Commended' at the 2009 ACT Travelwise awards. It provides worldwide routing using OpenStreetMap data.
